Health info: Thyroid

I had been asked by a customer from Sihat Booster about whether there will be any side effects if you consume alfalfa for a person with thyroid illness. Since I had no clue what actually thyroid is, I tried googling and found this info about thyroid:

What is thyroid?

In Medicine , thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck just below the Adams apple. The gland wraps around the windpipe (trachea) and has a shape that is similar to a butterfly formed by two wings (lobes) and attached by a middle part (isthmus). The thyroid gland works like a tiny factory that uses iodine (mostly from the diet in foods such as seafood and salt) to produce thyroid hormones. These hormones help to regulate the body's metabolism and effects processes, such as growth and other important functions of the body.

Who is affected with thyroid?

According to Wikipedia a person is at risk with thyroid illness if they are  :

* Women
* Smoker
* Age more than 60 years old
* Currently having illness with their pituitary or other endocrine
* Genetic
* Low of iodine and selenium in the body
* An autoimmune disorder
* Consumption of medication(s) that could trigger this illness

There are two (2) main disease related to thyroid which are :

1. Hypothyroidism - is a state where the thyroid gland secretes T3 and T4 hormones less than a normal person and this may be a problem to a person
2. Hyperthyroidism - is a state where the thyroid gland secretes more T3 and T4 hormones and makes the body auto immune system to react with the thyroid gland and makes it more active.

Here's a health info for you to know about caffeine...

What is actually caffeine? Well, according to Wikipedia the word "caffeine" is derived from the French word for coffee (café) while in Medicine Net.Com , it came from the German word kaffee which means coffee.

Source of caffeine :

Wikipedia explains that caffeine is found in varying quantities in the seeds, leaves, and fruit of some plants, where it acts as a natural pesticide that paralyzes and kills certain insects feeding on the plants. It is most commonly consumed by humans in infusions extracted from the seed of the coffee plant and the leaves of the tea bush, as well as from various foods and drinks containing products derived from the kola nut. Other sources include yerba matéguarana berries, guayusa, and the yaupon holly.

While Medicine Net.Com says that caffeine is naturally found in certain leaves, beans, and fruits of over 60 plants worldwide. Its bitterness acts as a deterrent to pests. The most common sources in our diet are coffee, tea leaves, cocoa beans, cola, and energy drinks. Effects of caffeine to our body :

Picture source : Wikipedia

Caffeine has its advantages and disadvantages. According to Nemours caffeine is diuretic, meaning it causes a person to urinate (pee) more. It's not clear whether this causes dehydration or not. To be safe, it's probably a good idea to stay away from too much caffeine in hot weather, during long workouts, or in other situations where you might sweat a lot.
Caffeine may also cause the body to lose calcium, and that can lead to bone loss over time. Drinking caffeine-containing soft drinks and coffee instead of milk can have an even greater impact on bone density and the risk of developing osteoporosis.
Caffeine can aggravate certain heart problems. It may also interact with some medications or supplements. If you are stressed or anxious, caffeine can make these feelings worse. Although caffeine is sometimes used to treat migraine headaches, it can make headaches worse for some people.
Although caffeine gives effect to the body, it can be controlled by the amount intake of caffeine in a persons daily food consumption. But, take good precautions as it can also be fatal if a person if taken in high dosage..
